Underworld 4: Awakening - (review)

“Underworld: Awakening is an important step for the series because it transports the story to a future where humans now pose the greatest danger to both vampires and Lycans. The movie’s darker atmosphere highlights how closely the supernatural races are fighting to survive because human technology and fear almost wiped them out. Surrounding the whole story is Selene, former relentless warrior who is now needed to protect a mysterious girl kindred from vengeful Lycans hell bent on using her for their resurgence thus increasing stakes and adding emotional dimension.

Visually, the film is skin tight, with quick tempo and a lot of action scenes with adrenaline pumping sequences of the most modern special effects. Its modern almost apocalyptic aesthetics intensify the feeling of the chaos and of the danger. David, the new vampire character, adds both excitement and emotional layers to the story as Selene thinks about her past and what’s to come. Fast-paced action and graphic scenes draw viewers in, surrounding them with a world of danger, experiments, and facing difficulties to survive.

While the movie is thematically rich and looks at resilience, identity, and moral questions, it occasionally falters in how smoothly its narrative fits together and how well it develops its characters. The story moves quickly, and key motivations don’t always get enough attention, allowing for more action instead of more development. Even so, the film’s heart comes from Selene’s fierce protection and her drive for revenge, which gives a raw experience that reflects love, sacrifice, and endurance as themes throughout the series. In the end, it’s a visually electrifying episode which makes a powerful impression of resilience and adaptation in a schismatic world.
