Red Shoes S01 [Pt.2] - (review)

Red Shoes S01 is a thrilling Korean drama that combines a rich fabric of love, betrayal, vengeance, and emotional wounds. The series, in its essence, deals with the abject consequence of desertion and the pursuit of a better sense of justice using powerful, multifaceted female characters. Hee-Kyung, leaving her family to follow her first love sparks a series of events that traumatize her daughter Jem-ma, growing up resentful and hungry to know the truth about the death of her father. The story is so well-balanced between the close family drama and darker notes of revenge that every episode is intense and engaging.

The show is visually and narratively metaphorical, with a number of symbolic visuals, most notably red shoes, which embody desire, longing, and eventually revenge. This theme highlights the narration or provides depth to the character struggle. The journey of Kim Jem-ma is intense in terms of emotions, as she is trying to unravel the secrets of her mother, but is also fighting with her own feelings of pain and betrayal. The acting is also strong, notably that of Choi Myoung-Gil as the cold Hee-Kyung, whose earlier behaviour looms long on the life of her daughter. Meanwhile, the love interest between Jem-ma and Yoon Gi-seok gives the revenge story a slightly romantic twist.

Although the series is a masterpiece in terms of dramatic mood and symbolism, the melodramatic nature of its plot and archetypical characters may seem somewhat exaggerated or even too predictable to some viewers. Still, the powerful acting, complicated character development, and captivating motives of lust and vengeance make Red Shoes S01 an emotionally compelling show. It stays with you, fills you with sadness, anger, and eventually, a sense of injustice, and is a must-watch, in case you enjoy dark secrets and family drama of high intensity.
