A Gentleman - (review)

A Gentleman is a complex and bold movie that brings together the aspects of romance, spy plot, and action to two time periods and forms a multifaceted structure of the story. The narrative swings between Gaurav, who is a simple-minded man in search of love and stability, and Rishi, an undercover spy in very dangerous foreign matters. This duality deals with themes of identity, sacrifice and the fragile boundary between mundane life and tremendous danger. The movie plot is a complex one as it exposes a series of undercover missions, deceit, and revenge that held my attention as I sought to unravel the enigma with the characters.

The mood swings towards light comedy romance to a sense of nervous thriller, which is filled with comedy and suspense at times. The acting is good, particularly the role of Rishi with his many-sided character, a common man with a dark side who makes the play interesting. The movie is paced rather fast and the action scenes and plot twists are very exciting, though sometimes the story can become convoluted, particularly with the numerous jumps between timelines and subplots. On the screen, the movie is made with a sleek spy thriller feel in it, and the action is choreographed and the locations are atmospheric, putting the audience on edge. Background score and sound design enhance the suspense and it goes along with the intense moments and emotional beats.

And what most impressed me was the discussion of the role of the past secrets and hidden identity in our current. The movie left me thinking of the sacrifices to be made in the name of peace and the forms of moral ambivalence experienced by the dual-life people. Although it sometimes suffers on narrative complexity and over ambition, A Gentleman ended up providing an excellent blend of romance, action and intrigue, which kept me emotionally and intellectually hooked. It is a movie that challenges the extent to which one can go to love and get redeemed and leaves one with an impression of complexity and resilience of morality.
