The movie ‘Ijogbon’ is a well though interesting coming of age thriller, based on four teenagers living in a village in the rural south West Nigeria who stumbles on un cut diamonds. This paper seeks to discuss some of the issues of the film in relation to friendship and community and an individual’s struggle for adulthood in a society tainted by greed as well as corruption. The protagonists of the story are Tobi, Afolabi, Kemi, and Adekunle, and the concerns in the play are moral issues as well as threats from characters who want the diamonds.
The film is shown exceptional in portraying group cohesion and how their life experiences affect them as fans are warm welcomed by young talents. It also looks at the socio-economic challenges in rural Nigeria, the ability of the community to fight corruption and exploitation. A visually rich, “Ijogbon” makes an aesthetic statement about the culture of the place where it was shot.
There should have been something of a cliché as some of them where very much on the script not surprising at all … but the story presented in the movie is one that packs a punch. When it comes to “Ijogbon” series, tagged at 4.5 out of 5 in rating, lovers of social justice and culture stories will surely get the best of their tears and engagement in the series.
