We Are Family - (review)

Featured here is a heart felt family drama that touches on topics of love, survival, and the unusual threads that bind a family together. At the heart of the story is Kajol as Maya, a warm and tough mother, living in Sydney after she and her husband Aman separate. The entrance of Aman’s new, career oriented girlfriend Shreya brings tension and conflict into the community in particular since children refuse her initially the one labelling her as a “witch”. The story realistically shows how emotional it can be to bring families together and why it is important to accept each other and understand our differences.

What stayed with me was seeing how Maya kept going, even though she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Her strong resolve to look after her children when she is struggling with her health adds real emotion to the narrative. The movie mixes laughter and affection with some touching thoughts about children and mothers. Through the performance of Kajol, the emotional essence of the movie has been anchored, and it becomes outwardly easy to connect with the character’s journey as the journey of an ordinary person with a goal though is inspiring. How Maya, her children, and Shreya interact emphasize the role of compassion and forgiveness in putting together a new family.

The film chooses a vibrant style of camerawork that matches its positive tone. The music in the movie helps express the story’s feelings, but it is never so strong that it distracts. The pace of the direction is quite effective as it unites light rejoices with grave considerations perfectly. Those critics who would find the plot predictable, or too idealistic are inevitably and powerfully reminded of the film’s central message of love and acceptance. Finally, “We Are Family” left me with a cloud of warm hopes for anyone who sees it, for it is about the bonds we make, with the family we must have.
