Unbending Mr. Fang is an effective treatment on moral strength in the world of corruption and destruction. The movie takes the audience through the loving, violent environment where honored man of integrity Fang comes out of Shaolin only to get involved in a struggle to right a wrong. It is serious, intense and heavy on a theme of integrity and redemption with the ability to stand in the face of massive and penetrating darkness. The movie makes us aware of importance of inner strength and moral conviction against corruption through its simple but powerful plot.
The acting is powerful with the exception of the role of Fang who is quiet and strong-willed. The characterizations of the supporting characters, especially the corrupt officials is very convincing and it builds up the tension very well. In appearance, the cinema of the film is cutting edge; the creative use of shadows and lighting bring raw reality and resonance. The direction is ruthlessly tense and well-styled, and the score is quiet, allowing the emotional hits to come cleanly through. Accuracy of editing and adherence to tempo keep the readers excited as the emotional and moral significance of the story will not go elsewhere.
The strongest impression was the uncompromised sense of morality by Fang that led to a question of importance of integrity in chaos. The movie would give me a feeling of admiration of his stubbornness and a message that even within the corrupt society, personal beliefs could create reforms. Unbending Mr. Fang is a tense, twenty-first-century saga, a testament to the human spirit, a testament that will stay with the viewer after the movie is over. It is an interesting mixture of action, drama and morality that demands the viewers to evaluate their beliefs.
