The Silence is a creepy innovative horror film that utilizes primitive terrors and sensory deprivation to make an eerie effect. The main point of the story, predatory animals which detect sounds, creates an instant anxiety right away and the film premise is further installed by the fact that the main character, Ally, lost her hearing a long time ago. This might be an individual relationship to silence, but as a result of it, this story looks into the idea of resilience, adaptation, and hope against uncompromised and unrelenting terror. Tensions and the suspense of watching Ally moving in a world with killer noise-seeking monsters, and at the same time being deaf to everything in her world, left me with a feeling of compassion and sometimes surprised tension as I was always aware of what she could not hear and of the danger she could not see.
The visual part of the film is really good, the combination of silence and background sounds makes the feeling of tension and vulnerability really chilling. The vesps scenes are really creepy, and their quick and predatory motions are coupled with the horrific notion that all it would take to kill a person is make some sound. The rhythm of the story is slow, and here one could hear the moments of silence in the middle of all the noise, which increases the horror and stakes of the story. The acting, especially that of Kiernan Shipka acting as Ally, is strong and subtle, portraying her determination and fear of being killed and despairing hope when she struggles to survive and save her family.
The element that resonated most sounded like the ability to learn how to adapt, both physically and emotionally and whether calamity can be used as a source of resilience which is what the film attempted to explore. The story of Ally who loses her hearing then finds her power speaking about how to use that disability as a positive factor inspired me and made me think. Although some of the plot reaches on familiar survival horror grounds, the creative premise of the movie, the chilling mood, and the heart-warming layers make **The Silence** a thrilling and eerie experience, which a viewer will remember long after the movie screening.
