The Night Comes For Us - (review)

The action and martial arts movie “The Night Comes for Us” is a perfect ride of the Indonesian martial arts. The viewer witnesses the action through the eyes of the protagonist Ito, a worthy fighter and a killer for the criminal world influenced by the confrontation of two groups of a Triad crime department. The storyline is intricately combined with the elements of the loyalty, honor and redemptive characteristics which gives an extra dimension to what is basically a violent and/angular motion picture.

The action scenes are violent, unkind and often staged as to bring the audience into the middle of conflicts. There are fist fights and breathing heavy and kicking and jumping and Iko Uwais himself makes immoral stunts which will make the audiences hold their breaths. Action direction is tight and professional and the locale of cramped Jakarta streets and alleys contributes significantly to cramp, bleak, desperation-ish look and feel of the flick. The real feel of the film is best shown through the use of exciting cinematography; the feel is quite edgy, anddogmatic, portraying the violence with raw, no-mercy approach.

The sound effects are great too with every impact, fact or shot is exaggerated just enough to ensure that the experience is almost multisensory. The score is just as successful in building up the tension the stakes feel and are portrayed as. Altogether, “The Night Comes for Us” is brutal, intense, and action-packed indie movie that proves, Indonesia doesn’t need Hollywood to show the world incredible martial arts performances. It is violent and intense action flick that would most definitely be for the martial arts buffs.
