The Last Stand - (review)

Director Kim Jee-woon directs “The Last Stand” to present an action-packed adventure that links high-octane thrills with a story about characters seeking redemption while taking on responsibility. Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on the role of Sheriff Ray Owens in the movie that pits him against drug lord Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) in a battle between the underdog and the criminal mastermind. Owens races through the story while confronting internal struggles while leading the effort to stop Cortez from reaching Mexico.

The film focuses primarily on redemption elements as Owens fights to accept himself while defining his purpose. The depth of Owens’s character together with a less experienced but supporting team group contributes to story development. Deputies maintain a strong bond that generates humor to offset serious aspects in the movie. The film showcases remarkable cinematography which pairs with tense action moments and well-executed special effects and emotional score by Marius de Vries.

External viewers can find excitement in “The Last Stand” yet the movie contains a mix of flaws which include questionable storyline elements and uncompleted characters. The film despite its flaws creates an emotional connection by showing us how real struggles exist within our personal selves. The film delivers entertaining value to the audience by presenting a vision about how bravery and redemption can manifest during challenging times.
