The King's Man - (review)

In “The King’s Man,” director Matthew Vaughn offers a prequel to the origins of the Kingsman organization set amidst the chaotic early 20th century. Orlando Oxford, played by Ralph Fiennes, sets out to stop a list of famous historical figures who are bent on releasing a catastrophic war. The movie balances the humor and seriousness to a tee and offers breathtaking cinematography and choreographed fight sequences.

Fiennes, ably supported by Gemma Arterton and Harris Dickinson, is convincing as a character divided between betrayal and moral compromise, encouraging the audience to think about the price of peace. The film weaves together actual historical events and personages, giving texture to its stylized action and encouraging thought about the shadowy side of human ambition.

Yet, the ambitious storyline is sometimes uneven, and there are a few of the plotlines that seem underdeveloped or hurried. In spite of these detractions, “The King’s Man” is an engaging entry in the series, blending humor, excellent action, and a contemplative examination of history. It ultimately welcomes the viewer to the glamorous yet perilous realm of spying, so it is certainly worth viewing for those who enjoy action and historical drama.
