The Big Hit - (review)

“The Big Hit,” a film directed by Kirk Wong in 1998 blends action comedy, comedy and black humor. The story follows the journey of Melvin Smiley, a hitman played by Mark Wahlberg, who unexpectedly falls for his kidnapping target.

While the action sequences are not overly intense the movie maintains a pace, with humor and poignant moments that reveal Melvins struggle to balance his criminal persona with newfound emotions. Wahlbergs portrayal captures Melvins vulnerabilities in his endearing romance with Christina Applegate. The dynamic duo of Lou Diamond Phillips and Avery Brooks injects a sense of camaraderie and levity into the narrative anchoring it in themes of friendship and trust.

Despite echoing elements of comedies “The Big Hit” distinguishes itself through its sharp wit and clever humor. Ultimately the film celebrates genres while exploring themes of love amidst chaos and the transformative power of relationships. Despite its nod, to eighties nostalgia spending two hours watching it is quite enjoyable.
