Superman - (review)

Superman 2025 is the dystopian story of a superhero facing the significant issue of individuals having to serve two different worlds: one that is their true nature and the world they are brought up in. The story of the film is an intertwining of political intrigue, the weakness of human beings, and action which keeps the viewer embedded in the narrative itself. The tone is somewhere between gritty realism and mythic grandeur and focuses on the inner conflict just as much as it focuses on Superman having to face off against overwhelming odds. What really stood out to me was the detailing of identity or how Superman has two different identities as both a Kryptonian and human and how these two things exercise his moral Muscle.

The acting is captivating especially that of Pawan Kalyan as Clark Kent / Superman who has a colored contrast of strong, unsure, and caring. The added cast, Lois Lane, Luthor, and Krypto give context and forward depth bringing the story beyond the standard superhero. Visually, the film is spectacular with its slick, futuristic set elements, exciting action scenes, and spectacular special effects – particularly the battles of the kaiju and the scenes of the damaged city. The score intensifies emotional accents, the entwining of heroism and moments of self-reflection and the direction has managed to achieve balance between the spectacle and development of characters.

The message of the movie: morality, influence, and self-acceptance were left impressing upon me. Superman fighting with his dark glimpse, Ultraman, and his fight against manipulation of Luthor eludes a feeling of hope and resiliency. The emotional peak of the movie with touching dialogues with his adoptive parents and the infinite faith of Lois stirred me up. Although the density of plot lines has moments of feeling cluttered and the narrative at times is built on complexity, the core ideal (the human and superhuman inclinations in doing good) is there. It is a spectacular, sensual trip that will challenge you to think outside of the box regarding what it is to be a hero in our new world.
