Squid Game* Season 02 continues to develop the story of Seong Gi-hun, who refused a fresh start in America and returned to the life-threatening event. At the risk of ₩45.6 billion the stakes go even higher, and while it remains to be seen what exactly it will explore inside Gi-hun’s head and his traumatic past, it definitely has potential. He immortalized new character and complication plots and the audience loves desperation. Employing a subplot from season 1 with Hwang Jun-ho comes as interesting but the whole arc again revolves around Gi-hun.
One of the most evoking scenes can be mentioned as the act of killing of Gi-hun best friend Jung-bae by The Front Man is one of the ways the show makes its viewers engage very emotionally. While continuing to wear the face of the show, the season suffers from such problems as pacing and the story’s shortcomings that make episodes seem overstuffed. It also misplaces importance on shocking graphic images when far more emphasis should be placed on the development of the characters.
Since it revives elements of morality, the loss, and survival, it may turn into excessive brutality, unnecessary and unneeded. However, generally, Season 2 has many great and even touching scenes, but here and there, show writers fail to provide a proper balance between narrative and the dark tones of the series. Members of the audience are left to wonder what the other side of the equation entails and what is often paid for in the process.
