AGASOBANUYE LIVE

See S01 - (review)

See Season 1 is an impressively bold visually rendered film of yesterday today and a dystopian tomorrow where human beings have lost their sight. The premise about a civilization accustomed to being blind and what happens when, upon birth, two twins begin to see with their eyes was enough to attract my interest with its original idea. It explores deep questions of perception, power, and fortitude leaving one to think about the extent to which our knowledge is limited to what we perceive- and what opportunities hide beyond.

The mood of the series is rough and blood-thirsty, as it drops the viewer into the world of raw survival, where the sense of smell, touch and instinct is all that matters. The cinematography is amazing and production design is very well done, focusing more on tactile and aural stimulation to keep the viewer in tune with the experiences of the characters. The intensity of the performance in Baba Voss, played by Jason Momoa as well as the rich characterization and natural chemistry lends itself to an emotional heart. The primitive but imaginative scenes are visually appealing and create a sense of wonder, and the execution of the sight through words, its loss and the moment when the sight returns are rousing and highly emotional.

Although overarchingly noble and emotionally stirring, See can be at times hopelessly convoluted when it comes to its plot and undercooked when focused on the characters. The measured pace occasionally stalls the action, but the integral music and philosophic approach to the perception keeps the series above water. Altogether, it made me emotional and meditative and helped me see how a real sight goes deeper than a set of eyes since it is associated with trust, intuition, and understanding. It is a radical ground-breaking series which is a tribute to human perseverance in the face of great tragic misfortune.
