An enjoyable comedy, action film and social commentary, Maaveeran gives a new twist to the old underdog tale. The film revolves around the life of Satya, a fearful cartoonist in a slum, and handles the topics of self-belief, courage, and rejection of corruption. A dramatic twist in his life begins after a spate of acrimonious experiences with a corrupt politician and his thugs, which leads him to the edge of the abyss. The story is perfectly blended with humor and heroism when Satya, who was a coward, starts to change following the unusual supernatural meeting with his own cartoon character, Maaveeran, the action figure that starts to manipulate him.
The dramatic power of the movie is in its persuasive character and dry social remarks. Sivakarthikeyan portrays a familiar character, and it is easy to follow his transformation of Satya as a weak and indecisive man to a strong warrior. The comedic concept of a cartoon character seizing power brings a childish and whimsical element to it, contrasting the heavy subject of corruption and injustice with humor. The representation of villainous character, MN Jeyakodi, by Mysskin himself also serves to emphasize the theme of political corruption and lack of ethics, making the story seem more than a mere entertainment.
Visually, it can be said that the film utilizes colorful action set-pieces and compelling cinematography to realize the comic-book-like aspect of the film and establish a very energetic and spirited mood. The screen story is well paced as it incorporates humor, emotions and action with equal measure and music has been used to highlight the spirited nature of the film. In conclusion, I was motivated after watching “Maaveeran” and it helped me realize that even a mild-mannered person can discover his voice and power when challenged. It is an enjoyable, yet a serious movie that glorifies resilience and the strength of the courageous in the face of injustice.
