Killer Elite - (review)

The movie “Killer Elite” follows an intense action plot which follows revenge and betrayal across the hazy moral abyss separating right from wrong. Based on vague real-life events this movie features Danny (Jason Statham) an accomplished hitman who returns to work to rescue his teacher Hunter (Robert De Niro) who faces capture from an embattled Arab sheikh. Danny receives the assignment to kill three former British Special Air Service members who slaughtered his son as part of his demanding new mission. A worldwide journey unfolds across a narrative which explores deep conflicts between morality and cunning actions and intense battles.

Through his intense and demanding role Statham shows the driven manner of a character who chooses loyalty and desperation as his driving forces. Through their shared past and violent experiences the connection between Statham and De Niro enriches their teacher-student bond. Through his character Clive Owen displays the formidable traits of a secret society leader who formerly led the SAS. Through his complex characterization he explores questions about honorable conduct versus fairness in a world thrown into disorder thus creating an interesting contrast to Danny’s pursuit of revenge.

The film display musical imagery in its polished cinematography as it transports viewers among Australian wilderness to Paris’ cityscape and London’s urban landscape and the Middle Eastern terrain. The movie’s action scenes perform effectively to maintain viewer tension throughout yet retain generic attributes which have appeared in various battle movies. A deeper analysis of the film reveals a thought-provoking story which examines the effects of violence and devotion to explore whether revenge will lead to actual closure. The film does not transform the established conventions in this film genre category. “Killer Elite” offers a thrilling and thoughtful adventure, bolstered by strong performances and a layered storyline that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.
