‘Gunpowder Milkshake,’ by Navot Papushado, is an actioner with considerable energy, and a great cast, featuring Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, and Michelle Yeoh. Sam (Gillan) – a highly-trained killer – who, while committing the hit, ends up guarding a little girl and patching things up with her mother – another contract killer. I think that the main advantage of the film, the characters’ development is the focus of the film plot, and I liked how Sam evolved throughout the movie switching between rough and sensitive man.
Stylistically colourful and campy, with the artwork concomitant to the comics’ realm, the film boasts of dynamic visuals occasionally bordering on ‘Keanu Reeves’ ‘John Wick.’ Keep in mind that scores tend to match the film in timbre and help dictate the pace of the given movie.
Although it does so remarkably splendidly, some aspects of its plot seem somewhat clichéd and there are problems with the pacing in the film’s third act. On the whole, it gives a gorgeous mix of action, comedy and drama, powerful femininity amidst in a industry flooded with macho films. What is left is an audience entertained and ready to have been taken through a realm of killers and companionship.
