From the first episode, I was hooked by the captivating mix of historical mysteries, ghostly voices and interesting characters found in the series “Guardians of the Dafeng.” The author incorporates Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism into the story, making it deeper and richer.
The plot gives Xu Qi An an interesting personality, starting as an arrested scholar and ultimately becoming someone who plays a crucial role. The story itself is interesting and this is enhanced by solid work from the actors. The director balances the action and thoughtful scenes which allows the themes of destiny, what’s right and wisdom to develop naturally. The use of beautiful shots, bright and vivid colors and atmospheric lighting creates both a mysterious and realistic feel in the film. The design team brings together traditional settings and chaotic cityscapes, whereas the special effect scenes with demons and witches are innovative and blend in seamlessly.
Beautiful music and storytelling sharply cut to each scene make the series more emotional and prevent the story from getting slow. The aspect that stood out most was how it explored destiny, made choices and remained tough, against a background of a well-imagined universe which amazed and interested me. There are a few points where the characters need more focus, yet “Guardians of the Dafeng” Season 1 is engaging, blending Chinese tradition with strong action plots that make me want to continue in the story.
