The film is a visually intelligent superhero movie that dives into the most opulent themes of supernatural revenge, sacrifice, and inner turmoil hard-pressed into the superhero movie. The film traces the exploits of Johnny Blaze who is a daredevil motorcycle stuntman who sells his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange of giving life to his dying father in vain thus making him an antihero in the Ghost Rider form. The movie discusses the conflict that he has with his new identity and haunt of any wrong that he did in the past, focusing on the lifelong conflict between good and evil. It is the tragic story that explores the redemption and the fruits of the decisions that people make, and leaves the viewer wondering whether people can be saved.
The cinematography is the best part of the movie, with burning fire, infernal sceneries, and the famous flaming skull accentuating a black comic-book mood that is exciting and creepy at the same time. The speed is rapid, the fights are well-conceived, shots are stylized and at the same time filled with heart. Sound design, and other music completed the need to immerse the audience in the world of Johnny, who is desperate in the supernatural world. Nicolas Cage plays his part with a lot of sincerity and embodies very well the inner conflict of Johnny, the other characters are not so deep, and they bring the additional intensity and camp.
I liked the idea of sacrifice and burden of historical sins that the film explored the most. It made me wonder how our decision defines our fate and whether we can be forgiven. The film oscillates between tough grit and lighthearted swagger and this at times can be totally disjointed but one must attribute it to the charm of the movie. Although there are cases of over-the-top execution, Ghost Rider is a thrilling mix of arresting design and heartfelt impact that makes the film an adrenal rush, but a thought-provoking journey of the supernatural.
