F1: The Movie - (review)

F1: The Movie is an exciting adventure of overcoming all odds that are placed against the high-stakes background of Formula One racing. Starting with the first scenes, the movie immerses the audience in adrenaline rush, which is the very feeling of racing in the concrete conditions of stunning shots, quick editing, and involving cinematography. Against a background of incomparable velocity and anarchy is a compelling tale of redemption and inner conflict where the towering presence of Sonny Hayes struggles with his tortured history and seeks redemption other than victory.

The descriptions are vivid-a tough and fragile Sonny is an ex-vet, and his experience is poignant, bringing out the issues of old age and self-finding. His romance with Kate McKenna adds emotional color, and the raw energy of young age and the building of his character is exposed in the hot blood of rookie Joshua Pearce and his cockiness. The director balances striking race scenes and those which are introspective so exceptionally, which is reinforced by a score that raises the emotional stakes. Cinematography and production design is a masterful portrayal of the polished glamour and dirty motor core of racing-making the entire experience plunge into the reality of the process.

The most moving thing to me was the message that the film contained regarding sacrifice and integrity. It is the ultimate level of sportsmanship and selflessness when Sonny makes a selfless decision in favor of others and sacrifices his own chance to win. Although the plot has some anticipated twists, and I believe that several supporting strands of the story could have been expanded on, the movie inspired and made me think. It is a glorification of stamina, with a lesson to us that it is the race against self as much as the race.
