AGASOBANUYE LIVE

Demon City - (review)

Through its dark narrative and marathon-like speed the tale of *Demon City* draws audience attention by telling stories of revenge and spiritual renewal. Shûhei Sakata becomes a vengeful man who goes through 15 years in prison hospital detention prior to deciding to recover his life. The story takes audiences through a journey between betrayal and justice and resilience to create a sympathetic figure for viewers in the midst of disorder.

The story takes place within a city where “demons” disguised by masks represent the pervasive corruption and evil that haunts Shûhei’s previous life. His mission to avenge his wronged self requires him to face fellow human adversaries originating from society while also combating his internal psychological challenges. When Shûhei recovers his physical capabilities in a psychological rebirth the audience sees him transform from victim into avenger. His relationships with others during the journey accentuate how human bonds matter when facing complete isolation which enriches his struggle.

The film’s atmospheric visual style brilliantly captures both the town’s harsh urban environment and Shûhei’s internal fight. Combat sequences during the movie display high intensity and stylish choreography which enables viewers to feel completely absorbed in the fight action. Through its powerful background music the film provides total audience absorption that intensifies the core plot. This film builds upon familiar revenge thriller elements but uses Shûhei’s emotional transformation to depict the consequences of unfair tragedy in a meaningful way.
