‘Buffalo Boys’, directed by Mike Wiluan shall be action adventure Java based movie containing powerful themes of honour, brotherhood and resentment. This movie explicate the events at which two boys Jamar and Suwo arrive in their country from America to kill their bandit brother who killed Sultan, their father. Still, their story has to do more with regaining what was stolen from them and coming to terms with one’s own sinfulness.
It tells both the themes of the movie which are compassion between brothers and action and has two terrific main casts namely Yoshi Sudarso and Abimana Aryasaty. Their mission is set against the wide background of historical Java colonial time; so the task the characters are to solve becomes more important. Impressive, it provides the audience with the Java Island look, the fight scenes choreography and Indonesian censorship.
Despite these it has major issues with flow – especially during the first three acts – and while some of the casts’ character arcs are satisfactory others appear shallow. *Buffalo Boys* explored questions of identity and succession and in this way informed the audience about their origins. In total, I did not find a perfect movie but, as for an action movie, it is not boring, and evokes the topics of family and identity or cultural roots at least.
