Shershaah - (review)

“Shershaah” is a poignant homage to the exceptional bravery and sacrifice of Captain Vikram Batra, whose heroism during the Kargil War of 1999 remains an inspiration. The film strikes a great balance between heart-warming storytelling and moments of thrill, bringing out both the personal and professional aspects of Vikram’s life in an unadorned but effective way. Though the film is not an epic war movie, Director Vishnuvardhan manages to maintain the flow of the story within the 135-minute long film, and successfully integrates moments of romance, action, and patriotism without descending into jingoism, lending a subtle nuance to the emotional experience.

Sidharth Malhotra’s portrayal of Vikram Batra is genuine and apt, lending authenticity and sincerity to the role. Kiara Advani is a warm and believable foil as his fiancee, and the pair’s chemistry lights up the screen. The supporting cast elevates the film further, offering performances that enrich the story with layers of depth. Cinematography: Cinematography by Kamaljeet Negi is noteworthy, particularly in combat scenes, which immerse the audience in the chaos and valor of war. The film’s emotional backdrop is enhanced by an enchanting soundtrack, crafted by an ensemble of talented composers including Jasleen Royal and Tanishk Bagchi, whose melodious compositions leave a lasting impact long after the credits roll.

What struck me most was how ‘Shershaah’ unapologetically invokes true patriotism without falling into the trap of pure jingoism, and therefore strikes a chord on a truly human level. With a powerful and simple story, along with powerful performances and technical excellence, the film left me in tears, and emotionally poignant – an emotional reminder of the sacrifices made by courageous soldiers. It’s a poignant ode that honours heroism, love, and the unyielding spirit of a true Indian hero.
