The Immortal Ascension Season 01, is a beautifully presented and emotionally evocative parade into the fantastically imaginative world of cultivation. It has a unique blend of cosmic celestial warfare and the intense moments of inner struggle and the result is a mood that is alternatively heroic and sensitive. Cinematography and production design are also scrupulous, and they put the viewers into the world of ancient sect halls, mist-covered valleys, and godlike scenery. Special effects are used extensively and every bit of them fits smoothly and adds the effect of magic and divine power without being excessive. The music is also a perfect supplement to the visuals because it combines angelic tones with heart-stopping created a sense of anticipation and promoted the overall availability of the story and situation.
The central hero of the series, Han Li, is a modest yet strong man whose silent power and subtle expressions fill anyone with empathy. The story of his rise from a low status to a great cultivator is also a reflection of ambition, sacrifice and a man staying married to his mortal roots. The role of supporting characters, in particular that of Nangong Wan and the antagonists, provides additional depth of the theme, reinforced by the effects of strength, weakness, greed, and arrogance. This conversation, full of poetic and philosophical insinuations, prompts a viewer to ponder the issues of life and death, transcendence even long after watching the movie is over.
Although the series is excellent in terms of story telling, character building and visual art direction, it can at times border melodrama, and the twists may seem somewhat forced at times. Nonetheless, being thematically rich and realistic in the depiction of moral ambiguity, it is an engrossing one to watch. The Immortal Ascension had a strong effect on me with its examination of the timeless nature of human endeavor, and this exalted role play is an uplifting and thought provoking piece that goes far beyond spectacle to poignantly examine the most lofty of pursuits.
