Renegade Nell Season 1 is a burst of historical adventure, fantasy, and feminist empowerment and this genre combination made me enjoy the series to the end. The series is set against the harsh and primordial setting of 18 th century England and this brings out Nell Jackson who is a bright female who bears no guilt at all being wrongly accused of murder. Her adventurous outlawing after eking a daring escape makes her survival story a masterpiece of adventure full of danger, humor, and magical excitement which was made possible by the naughty magical sprite Billy Blind. The plentiful period atmosphere and the beautiful elements of fantasy blend in a world that seems both real and full of rich imagination and takes the viewer on a thrilling adventure of rebellion and self-discovery.
The essence of the series resides in the strength of the character Nell and the urgency to have justice in the political games and in using her body. Neither a neurotic antiheroine nor an unrelatable action hero, yet strong, clever, and maybe still a bit naive, she is a heroine that most people can relate to, and her relationship with her sisters Roxy and her George provides the story with a wonderful depth and emotional climax. Even the secondary characters, in particular the malicious Earl of Poynton, introduce elements of mystery and danger that maintain a lively pace and the action interesting. Acting is good all throughout and the performance of Nell encapsulates very effectively ferocious intent on the one hand and vulnerability on the other. Direction, cinematography, and production design do their job together to create the feeling of grittiness and magic, enhancing the idea of adventure and wonder of the series.
The best thing I heard in the series was about being courageous and to fight till the end to be right even with the overlying circumstances. The emotional rhythms and humorous speech evoke the hope and feeling of empowerment that will remain with the viewer long after they are watching. Even though I would have liked to know more interesting backgrounds of certain characters and more complex magic phenomena, the first season of “Renegade Nell” is a thrilling and motivating beginning. It is a daring message that saved that wit and courage are a powerful thing and it is particularly so, when held by a woman who is not afraid of cutting her own path.
