My Demon Season 01 - (review)

“My Demon” Season 1 contains lots of supernatural, family and romance elements and it uses them to make a thoughtful and detailed plot that is sure to keep you watching. The main character, Jeong Gu-won, is a 200-year-old demon whose powers disappear when he meets the rich Do Do-hee and the story traces the transformation of their contract marriage into real love. Jane the Virgin does well at merging humor, mystery and strong emotions, specifically as the show explores issues of trust, earlier lives and giving up things for love. Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung have a great chemistry that keeps the story strong and entertaining during all the family fights and supernatural events.

With more seasons, the series fills up, making it feel like there are too many important bits which is often confusing and creates inconsistencies. Having new things happen all the time—some appearing and then suddenly leaving—makes the story unclear and the emotions less strong. Things like major character deaths and explosive surprises about the past are used too often and mess up the logical progress of the story. Starting from the second half, the series has gaps in the story and inconsistent motivations of characters and certain plotlines are disproved or resolved swiftly. Because of these issues and too many melodramatic events, the well-made and emotional scenes often get overlooked.

The script might have problems, but the film provides several unforgettable moments and lovely performances from its main cast, especially Kim Yoo-jung, Song Kang and Kim Hae Sook. The show explores the true feelings of its characters such as Do-hee’s courage and Gu-won’s dilemmas and leaves the viewer with lots of memorable heartfelt moments. Thanks to the side characters and supporting cast, the drama of the main characters is balanced by lighter and relatable conversations. While taking on a large scale sometimes makes the show’s story difficult, you’ll still find this show has both thrilling and heartwarming moments. As a whole, “My Demon” relies on excellent performances and touching scenes to keep things interesting, although its plots sometimes turn too dramatic.
