Azaad is a strong cinematic story set around the chaotic time of India’s struggle for independence in the 1920s. Abhishek Kapoor tells a touching story about a young stable boy and his horse and skillfully reveals the emotional side of that era. Someone’s bond with their friend helps highlight the strength, faith and personal growth needed to fight for freedom as a nation.
The actors help take the movie’s emotional level to a higher point. Devgn’s presence supports the film, while Devgan adds real emotion to the story of the child. Diana Penty and Piyush Mishra, who play the supporting roles, help make the film’s environment historical yet engaging. The film looks great, thanks to wide scenery, rich details and a light score that does not distract from main events but actually makes them even more powerful.
What I liked most was the emphasis on hope and bravery shown in the simplest ways. Reading how close the boy and his horse were made me admire them and realize that courage often comes from apparently simple actions. While certain parts of the movie moved too fast and some moments were easy to guess, “Azaad” ends up being a touching and motivating film, one you don’t soon forget.
