The Forever Purge - (review)

“The Forever Purge” (2021), directed by Everardo Gout, explores the themes of anarchy and societal breakdown while developing the idea of state-sanctioned violence from the original Purge franchise. The movie presents a nightmare situation in which the yearly Purge, usually a twelve-hour event, turns into a never-ending terror in the hands of a gang of raiders who think that anarchy should never terminate. Filmed on the dry Texas terrain, it succeeds in portraying desperation and the feeling of existing in fear in the midst of violence.

Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta’s performances, assisted by a strong ensemble cast, bring depth and nuance to their characters, underlining themes of hope and humanity in the midst of despair. The film’s commentary skirts real-world issues of extremism, immigration, and societal division, provoking thought and discussion.

With its ominous music and suspenseful camerawork, “The Forever Purge” keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. It is not without its flaws, though; elements of predictability and character development may hinder complete immersion. These distractions aside, the film leaves a lasting impression, causing audiences to consider the structures of society and the consequences of collective decisions. A fine blend of horror, action, and social commentary, it’s an exciting must-watch for enthusiasts of thrills and substance alike.
