In a future world managed by a One-Child Policy because of overpopulation we see Danny Cavelier direct “What Happened to Monday.” Under the control of Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close) who commands the Child Allocation Bureau the story tracks seven identical septuplets played by Noomi Rapace as they hide in obscurity. Starters’ grandparents raise them as they merge identities under Karen Settman’s name but each girl primarily represents a different day of the week.
Through its science fiction and thriller sections the film creates a thorough exploration of identity alongside survival concerns in a society driven by acceptance of authority. Through their powerful bond along with excellent performances from Maria Rapace the story achieves substantial emotional weight. The story reaches its peak after Monday disappears while her sisters embark on a dangerous search facing threats from outside and internal conflicts.
Appealing to viewers’ eyes the film showcases different sets that show the uncomfortable interior space of the sisters’ residence versus the challenging exterior environment. Although “What Happened to Monday” entertains viewers throughout much of its run it still encounters pacing problems in the second part along with significant plot elements that call for more thorough examination. Using a totalitarian framework “What Happened to Monday” studies the challenges of maintaining individuality and protecting family unity beyond survival ethics.
