A fast-paced and action-thriller film that has a thought-provoking approach upon issues of redemption, 24 Hours to Live is intense and is full of explosive action. The heart-wrenching role of Travis Conrad by Ethan Hawke, the man who is given a second chance in life after being granted one last mission is an interesting touch to the endless adrenaline and chase. The delicate nature of the character hidden behind the tough shell makes his interpretation a fine balance and, consequently, renders the moral, self-identity, and the passage of time the questions explored throughout the film to have greater impact.
The action-packed visual styling and the pace of the film keep you at the edge of your seat and with a lot of dynamic camera work in a grim set design drops you deep into the narrow sphere of existence of Conrad. The score and crafting reinforce the intensity of action over solid shots of reflection and thought. Although the speech and some of the plot points are an overused comfort zone, the vitality and depth of the summation promote the experience to something more than typical genre normality.
The themes of time and redemption the movie meditates on is what stuck with me the most because instants make our lives and it is by facing our pasts that can help us find a way towards salvation. “24 Hours to Live” is not just a typical action movie but a reminder of the impermanence of existence in the stylish way it does it. It goes out there with a punch in the guts that is exhilarating though never really forgetting the action even after the end credits.
