10,000 BC - (review)

In “10,000 BC” Roland Emmerich narrates the prehistoric epic tale of D’Leh the mammoth hunter who trails behind horseback warriors to save his true love Evolet. The film demonstrates a hero’s traditional narrative through its exploration of love and courage between tribal identity and sacrifice while showing loyalty as a fundamental theme.

For some segments the plot adopts conventional adventure elements that make certain parts predictable and not emotionally powerful. D’Leh’s character in the film feels genuine through Steven Strait’s performance yet Evolet played by Camilla Belle demonstrates strength but she sometimes resembles the ‘damsel in distress’ type. The prehistoric landscape appears magnificent through remarkable cinematography alongside scoring that optimizes emotional intensity although it sometimes intensifies scenes with excessive drama.

Throughout its attempt to connect emotionally the movie tends to depict characters through basic roles instead of showing complete personhood. The visual appeal of “10,000 BC” together with its exciting adventure elements creates a pleasurable viewing experience although some dramatic aspects fall short.
