Vantage Point - (review)

Vantage point is an action adventurous thriller with a lot of ambitions and velocity that addresses the mayhem and the complexity of an assassination scheme against the American President on a public appearance in Salamanca, Spain. The multidimensional, even puzzle-like structure of the film, which is recounting the same key events through the eyes of different people in the law enforcement system and then through the eyes of a security officer, then through the eyes of the audience and even members of the terrorist cell, made it impossible to take my eyes off the screen the whole time. Such usage of narrative device works perfectly to emphasize how every smallest detail can alter our perception of what happened to the drastic degree and the story can be considered not just catchy but pretty thought-provoking as well.

The best part of it all in the film is the mastery of the film at demonstrating the instability of violence and insecurity. The way each character sees things, gives the reader a new piece of information and the suspense grows, as it reveals part by part where it is going. The cast is very good and the various points of view are well done as each contributes to the nuance. The fighting scenes are well-coordinated and the dynamic camera work in the cinematography puts you in the heart of the confusion and pace of the moment to build tension and make me feel like a real participant in solving the crime.

Nevertheless, this kind of approach leads to moments of the film repeatedly getting too dependent on plot twists and quick cuts, which can be disorientating and even lose emotional substance at times. Nevertheless, the fast-tempo and inventive plotting of the movie put me in the position of the edge of the seat feeling the anxiety, curiosity, and frustration that reflects the appearance of a real-life emergency. In conclusion, a good thought-provoking moral that arises is how in the most tragic moments, perception can govern so strongly as to match reality and this makes me more aware, by the end, of just how perspective dictates truth.
