*The Kid Who Would Be King* is a movie about childhood dreams and heroes that wisely connects traditional magic with more current themes. The story carries audiences back to a time of youth and hope, making us feel happy and inspired. By adapting Arthurian legend to fit today’s teenage culture, the book makes its story interesting and easy for everyone to connect with, highlighting courage, leadership and what really matters.
Everything about the cast is spot on and Louis Ashbourne Serkis as Alex makes his struggles and newfound self-assurance feel real. The character of Morgana is intense, still showing a bit of pain that fills out the story. It balances laughter and drama, moving fast and appearing colorful, while pulling the audience in from start to finish. The effects improve the fantastical sides without taking away from the main plot which helps everything feel more real.
I appreciated the film especially because it taught about teamwork, kindness and resilience, all topics that are especially meaningful today. The honest way it’s made, along with the excitement, makes everyone who watches feel encouraged to believe in being brave and helpful. Despite including a few usual cliches, the genuine atmosphere of excitement makes the film a charming and encouraging story that stays with you positively.
