Romeo & Juliet - (review)

“The energizing movie directed by Carlei in 2013 makes an intense popular adaptation that retains every detail of Shakespeare’s tragedy. The actual conversations have been retained by the director; the elegant and brilliant drama of young lovers’s passion played by Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld gives audience understanding in Montagues and Capulets’ enmity.

They touch on this view and especially capture the desperation of having to conduct the wedding clandestinely and yet it also shows the forces that stand to pull apart the young couple. Booth and Steinfeld are not stellar performers but they do a good enough job of exposing their characters’ inner conflicts. On the technical front, set designs and lighting peddle a Renaissance Florence while making the scenes between the two families charged with sensuousness.

The aesthetic team is successful in telling the audience the simple feeling of the story, but the disadvantage of it is the flow. The complexity of the film is also brought by good actors such as Paul Giamatti, in portraying Friar Laurence but sadly, the actors do not always give the best of their performances. The romantic tension is substantiated by composed by Abel Korzeniowski. In sum, the 2013 “Romeo and Juliet” is a big and romanticised and the concentrated version that displays the conflict between the two families as a tragic tale of strict pair of young lovers.
