The movie “Colombiana” starts with intense action and never lets up, blending tough scenes with a strong emotional undertone. It follows a young girl trying to get retribution after seeing her parents killed and looks at ideas of justice, trauma and resilience. Movies from the action genre use loud scenes and exciting stunts together with scenes where the lead character faces the consequences of the past and pushes forward with revenge.
You will feel every edge of danger in the movie which follows the characters through Bogota and far away. Olivier Megaton shows the contrast between the city’s beautiful setting and its violent nature by filming screamingly vivid scenarios. Zoe Saldana performs her part with conviction, allowing her to reflect her character’s development, so what she goes through appears truly significant. The use of music makes the thrilling scenes more dramatic and tense.
Colombiana may use some familiar patterns in its story, but it’s the constant energy and emotional focus that make it better than most revenge movies. The strongest part of the story was seeing a young woman finding her way in tumultuous times because of sadness and her wish for justice. This novel is ultimately a clear indication of how people can overcome hardship and be redeemed from tragedy. Watching the film gave me new energy and made me think about how the most personal struggles also matter the most.
